The indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! by ABC has sparked intense debate in the United States. The network announced the move after Kimmel’s September 15 monologue, in which he addressed how some conservative groups reacted to the assassination of political commentator Charlie Kirk.
Olivia Rodrigo speaks out
Among the voices criticizing the decision is Olivia Rodrigo. The 22-year-old pop star took to her social media to share her frustration with ABC’s decision, writing:
“So upset over this blatant censorship and abuse of power. I stand with Jimmy Kimmel and I stand for freedom of speech.”
Rodrigo also reposted a statement from SAG-AFTRA, the union representing more than 160,000 entertainment industry professionals, which strongly condemned the suspension.
SAG-AFTRA calls it an attack on free speech
In its statement, the organization argued that ABC’s choice — as a Disney subsidiary — undermines fundamental rights:
“Democracy thrives when diverse points of view are expressed. Suppression and retaliation put everyone’s freedoms at risk.”
The union emphasized that suspending the show sets a dangerous precedent, threatening both creators and audiences.
More artists join in
Country singer Margo Price also voiced her disapproval. Just days after appearing on the show, she shared a clip of her performance of “Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down” with a symbolic caption: “If this was the last word, I’m glad it was mine.”
A growing controversy
The suspension has polarized opinion. While some applaud ABC’s action, arguing that Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate, others see it as a clear act of censorship that undermines media diversity in the U.S.
The debate highlights an increasingly urgent question: where should the line be drawn between freedom of expression and the editorial limits imposed by major networks?
